Stories of Success - Candidate of the Year 2010

Mumtaz Fazlee Standard Chartered Bank

UKTI, the UK’s international trade promotion body says that one of our top exports is a British professional qualification, valued the world over.  Sri Lankan, Mumtaz wanted to define her HR career by gaining CIPD recognition.  As a premier provider of professional qualifications, Cullen Scholefield helped her reach her goal, and did it almost entirely from a very remote distance.  She also won Cullen Scholefield’s Candidate of the Year for her work.

Mumtaz’s career has been with an international bank, and she has had the opportunity of working across the Middle East, South and South East Asia.  When she first started, there was no formal HR operation in her bank, it was all carried out in the Administration department but by working there, she began to build HR knowledge.

When the bank did set up a separate HR department, she was in pole position.  She was quickly able to demonstrate her skills in employee and industrial relations, crucial early tasks for the new department.  In 1998, she was appointed Head of HR and over the next ten years, carried out a huge range of assignments across the region especially dealing with restructuring departments and post merger amalgamations.

In 2009, Mumtaz decided that she wanted to encapsulate all this experience into a universally recognised professional qualification – CIPD membership.  She started out with another training provider, who left her high and dry, but. Cullen Scholefield came to the rescue and, over the next few months under the guidance of mentor Les Jones, she completed her assignment. Mumtaz then faced the assessment interview with a second Cullen Scholefield adviser, Susan Goulbourne.

The result? She ended up with a Distinction for her management report and sailed into CIPD membership.  As Mumtaz says: ”Thanks to Cullen Scholefield for the excellent support.  The transition from the previous provider was very smoothly done and I am really grateful to Les for his encouragement and for the simple approach he took.  Susan, too, was really great and gave me the confidence I needed!  Although we communicated by email, the regular telephone calls kept me in touch on a very personal level as well as answering my queries and concerns.”

Maureen Scholefield says:” Mumtaz’s success was brilliant – so much so that she won our very own Candidate of the Year Award.  But it just shows that the Cullen Scholefield way works superbly, however far away our client may be.”
